This page will be a work in progress. As we do different things that I think others may
be interested in knowing what they cost, I will add them here. As we go along there will
even be some pictures to go with it. Except as noted, the prices listed here are from
2006 and 2007. It may not be possible to keep this page up to date.

1. Filled the Jeep up with unleaded gasoline at the local Pemex station.
Gas is sold by the liter and the prices are fairly standard around the
whole country. This day the price was 5,01 pesos/liter and we put in
79.84 liters. There are 3,78 liters per gallon so we put in 20.63
gallons. It cost us $1.76/gallon. Gas in the US right now is over $2/gal
2. We got the oil changed and all the other fluids checked. The price
for the oil change includes oil filter, 6 qts of oil and 1 qt of coolant.
3. We bought one papaya, 3 mangos and 2 onions.
4. Dinner out was at a local seafood restaurant a bit north of
Calderitas. We had chips with dip, two seafood dinners with sides of
salad, beans, rice, plantain and French fries.
5. Our 12 year old dog, Dinah, was in need of a teeth cleaning. The
price included anesthesia and antibiotics for 7 days. Before leaving the
States I was quoted $273 from my local vet for cleaning her teeth.
8. We ate at Mercedes and Wilbert's little tienda in Calderitas. All
they serve are empanadas - dough with meat or cheese or fish or
potatoes or beans inside and then deep fried. They are 3 pesos each.
Sodas were 5 pesos each.
6. Lunch was at a little Cocina Economica where an older woman cooks
each day. She offers 3 entrees from which to choose and lots of
tortillas, beans and rice to go with it. We also had two softdrinks.
9. In order to make our tank water hold out longer between fillings
we are purchasing purified water in 20 liter (a little more than 5
gals) plastic jugs. The deposit on the bottle is 50 pesos and then you
just exchange it for a full one the next time for 14 pesos. When you
are in a restaurant this is what you are served. Most local families
use this for their home drinking water.
7. A track had been cut lengthwise on the property a number of years
ago. It was almost entirely grown over and we wanted to take the
motorhome to the front. Pablo, a fellow who clears jungle land for a
living, worked 4 days to make a road wide enough and tall enough to
bring in the motorhome.
So how much does it cost to live here in the Yucatan? What services are available and how much do they cost?
