Everyone loves to talk about the weather
The weather is wonderful !!! Who doesn't like balmy breezes, cool nights and glorious days?
During November, December, January, February and March the days are cool to warm with an occasional hot one. April and May are the hottest
driest months but there are wonderful breezes to make it nice. The months of June through August are hot but the heat is reduced by the almost
daily afternoon rain showers. The official hurricane season is June 1st through November 30th and is when most of the rainfall occurs. Hurricanes
in this area generally fall toward the end of the official season. Average annual rainfall is approximately 47 inches.
Two large hurricanes have hit this area in the last 100 years - Hurricane Janet in the mid 50s and Hurricane Dean in 2007. Since Hurricane Janet,
building designs have changed and so has the warning system. Hurricane Dean caused destruction of the Caribbean coastal properties and, in the
inland areas, fragile structures and trees were lost.
The Mexican government does a fabulous job of early warning, evacuation of low lying areas and providing shelter. There was no loss of life in the
coastal state of Quintana Roo during Hurricane Dean. If you look at a map of where Maricasa is located, you will notice that the force of any
hurricanes will be mitigated by the Bay of Chetumal and the land surfaces that are between the property and the open Caribbean waters. The
structures at Maricasa were not damaged during Hurricane Dean but we lost trees that were destined to be removed to make room for houses
someday.
During the rainy season, in general, it rains more in the afternoon than in the morning so outdoor activities are planned for the mornings. The rain
cools things down and everything is beautifully green. For outdoor recreation and sports, the early mornings are delightful. Early mornings and
evenings are always comfortable for whatever you do here. During the hottest part of the day, swing in a hammock in the shade and the breeze
with a book or with friends or soak in the cool, fresh-water pond.
